The practice · Bentonville, Arkansas · est. November 2020
Most Bentonville relationships still run on scarcity.
You are one supplier on a long roster. You get a half-hour a week. Requests come back in a week. Insights barely come back at all — the people holding the calendar are too far from the business to see what the item can actually do. Josh Hopkins lived that model from the supplier side: one of eighteen brands sharing a cross-functional team of three. He built Hop CPG to refuse it.
Hop starts somewhere quieter than a pitch deck. The practice looks for what Josh calls the item’s innate value — “to the final consumer, category, merchant, or department,” judged against “each item’s maximum capabilities.” Not the story a brand wishes were true. The story the product can earn on shelf and on site.
That is the whole arc of the work. An idea that still needs scoping, manufacturing, packaging, and a logistics path that can survive a Walmart ask. A brand ready to pitch that needs the room, the prep, and the contacts. An item already through the door that needs cleaner setup, sharper content, or a real plan for the next line review. An existing supplier watching deductions and claims hollow out the P&L. Shelf first. Site included. Same standard either way.
Hop is selective on purpose. The practice is for teams that care about the brand and are willing to flex to win with the largest retailer in the game. It is not for anyone hunting a warm handshake without the product, the prep, or the follow-through. Reputation travels faster in Bentonville than a calendar invite.
Day to day, the core stays close to the business: how is the item performing, what do we change, what do we walk into the next line review with. Content that keeps getting better. Item creation that is fast and clean. Reporting that surfaces exceptions before they become surprises. Around that core, specialists work under the Hop umbrella — order-to-cash and replenishment veterans, reporting talent that can scale dashboards across retailers, finance analysts who can take a new venture to a bank-ready P&L. Digitally focused agencies stay partners. Hop runs strategy. Digital plugs in when the work asks for it.
The practice opened in November 2020 with a short list of clients and has stayed that way on purpose. The name on the door is now Hop CPG. The filter has not loosened.
