Josh Hopkins, founder of Hop CPG

In the Hopkins family, the men have answered to Hop or Hoppy among friends for as long as anyone bothers to remember. In public he is Josh Hopkins — Rogers-raised, Bentonville-positioned, and the person who decides whether a brand walks into Home Office with Hop CPG beside them.

He works from a home office minutes from the Walmart and Sam’s campus. Samples move through that room. After final approval, so do deliveries to the Layout Center. The geography is not branding. It is the job.

Josh studied Financial Management and Investment at the University of Arkansas and entered CPG in 2012 as a finance analyst at Scotts Miracle-Gro. Then came just shy of three years inside Walmart Merchandising in a stretch he still calls tumultuous: Merchandise Planner in Pet, then Senior Manager of Business Analytics in HBA and Personal Care. He was the buyer’s right hand through line review and joint business planning. More than five hundred line reviews from the other side of the desk. Best in class. Worst in class. No theory required after that.

What stuck was a way of seeing. He builds financial models — simple when simple wins, complex when the merchant needs the full picture — and he has used them to change minds in the room. Underneath the spreadsheets is the same specialty he names without decoration: understand a brand’s capabilities, then maximize what those capabilities can become.

The practice itself started with a picture he could not unsee. Suppliers lining up line-review appointments “like first dates.” Josh decided reputation mattered more than volume.

“I don’t plan to take every customer that calls me into a meeting with Walmart.”

A client who goes to Home Office with him will have “a product worth selling” and will be “prepared to conduct themselves in the meeting and all necessary follow-up to be on shelf on time.” If a team cannot or will not get there, he will not walk them in. The filter is the product.

When the work quiets, he is usually in the Ozarks — golf course or water. He has kite-surfed and skydived in Dubai, moved to New York on short notice, raced offshore for days. If it sounds like an adventure, he may be up for it. The line he keeps close is from The Shawshank Redemption: get busy living, or get busy dying.

The nickname on this page is the family one. The standard in the meeting room is his.
